Sharing Student Work with Writeboard

WriteboardA couple of weeks ago on this post I showed you how 4th grade students have been working on Weather Podcasts. What do you do with them when you are finished? How do you publish them? Post them to a Writeboard so that parents and grandparents can see them and even make comments. Using a Writeboard to share student work is great for any project, actually. Take a look at Mr. Golden’s Weather Writeboard (password = room8) and be sure to leave a comment for his students! Another way to share podcasts is to make your own podcast website using iWeb. Just choose the Podcast Template and drag your student’s podcasts into the placeholders. I’d be happy to show you how to set that up if you let me know.

4th Grade Weather Podcasts

WeatherPodcastFourth grade students at Trevvett Elementary worked on Weather podcasts today. I gave them a GarageBand Template and a folder of pictures to use which you can download here. They chose pictures of weather instruments, added their own voiceovers to describe the instruments, and then picked a soundtrack to go along with their podcast. They didn’t quite finish today, but you can see a great start by clicking here. Notice at the bottom right corner of the video is a popup menu. Those are chapters which you can click on to go right to that section. The students added those themselves in GarageBand.

5th Grade Rocks Podcast

RocksRockFifth graders at Chamberlayne Elementary were rock stars today. They made rock podcasts with photos of the different types of rocks jammin’ out on electric guitars. They added their own voiceovers to describe the rocks and how they are formed, then they chose a musical soundtrack. They didn’t finish today, but you can see what they started on by clicking here. To download all the files for this project click here. The files include 3 Pixies for making the pictures of each rock and a GarageBand template to get the students started, plus a folder of pictures to use (that’s why it’s 41MB!) Finally be sure to check out my page of interactive rock websites for yor students to explore by clicking here. Rock on!

Teacher Spotlight – Ms. Stewart

3rdEmilyStewartMs. Stewart, 3rd Grade teacher at Holladay, found a creative way to share a fund raising project with the staff at her school – she created a podcast in GarageBand. In the video she uses photos, voiceovers, and animal sound effects to show teachers how to collect money for Maymont’s Animal Appreciation Program. You can see how much more effective this is than simply sending an email or making an announcement. Emily, thanks for going above and beyond the call of duty for the sake of Maymont’s animals! You can take a look at her podcast by clicking here.

3rd Grade Animals Podcasts

AmazingAnimalsIn third grade today at Holladay Elementary we made “Amazing Animals” podcasts (SOL 3.4). I gave them a folder of pictures to use to show hibernation, migration, camouflage, and mimicry. Then I showed them how to add the photos to the podcast track, record their voices on the vocals track, and find a song for the jingles track. We only had time to do the first topic, hibernation, but they will continue the project on their own and at a later date I will post some of the finished podcasts. You can see my sample here and student samples here and here (the second one I included because I thought it was funny!) Remember they are small videos because they are for playing on iPods. You can download the entire lesson with the photos, a template for dragging into student folders, and the sample here.
