Kindergarten Maps & GoogleEarth

Today in kindergarten at Chamberlayne Elementary, students worked on creating Keynote slideshows about maps (K.4, K.5). First I showed them Google Earth so they could get an idea of how maps are made. We zoomed down and found their school. This is a fantastic tool to use with all grade levels but especially with lower grades because they can actually see familiar buildings and roads from above. I used screenshots from Google Earth to make the Keynote template which the students opened next. You can download it by clicking here. The template already has directions and some built-in animations, so students just need to follow the directions on each slide and press play. You can see a sample by clicking here. If you have time, a good idea would be for the students to use the audio record feature of Keynote to record themselves explaining each slide.

4th Grade Jeopardy SOL Review

Fourth grade students in Ms. Shaffer’s class at Laburnum Elementary created their own SOL Jeopardy Review game with Keynote. Each student wrote a social studies or science question on a slide. We talked about making the answer choices a little bit tricky. Then we made a “You’re right, go on to the next question!” slide and a “Try again” slide. You can click here to download the images we used on those slides. Next came the complicated part, but these students were up for the challenge because they’ve been working with Keynote all year. They had to add hyperlinks to each answer choice so when someone clicked on it they would be taken to the correct response slide. Then we had to add hyperlinked buttons to the response slides to either send them to the main screen to choose a new question or send them back to the same question to try again. Students who finished early could work on creating another question. I took all the slides and put them together into one Keynote, linking the buttons on the main screen to each question. The final result looks like this. It will be a great review for these students because it was created by them! Let me know if you’d like to make one with your class.

2nd & 1st Grade Plants Keynote

I’ve had several requests from second and first grade teachers for plants lessons so I created a Keynote activity that can be used by either grade (SOL 1.4b, 2.4b). The first slide involves identifying the needs of a plant (air, place, light, water) and labeling the parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, blossom). The second slide involves matching photos of fruits with photos of their blossoms in a Smart Build. In the activity packet that you can download here, I include a folder of many pictures of fruits and blossoms for students to drag into the boxes. I also include the Keynote template and some cool time lapse videos of blossoms turning into fruits. After the students complete the activity, they record their voiceover as the slideshow plays. Animations are automatically built into the Keynote so different things appear as the students talk about them. To see a completed student project click here.

Kindergarten Spelling & Sight Words

A kindergarten teacher wanted her students to practice spelling and sight words with technology so I created two activities that you might find useful, or you can change them to fit your specific words. The first one (pictured) is a Numbers activity to review their spelling words. The students look at the picture by each word and click the sound button to listen to the word read aloud. Then they choose the correct vowel from a drop down menu to complete the word. The spreadsheet is self-correcting so a smile will appear if they are right and a sad face appears if they are wrong. You can download the spelling Numbers activity by clicking here. The second one is a Keynote slideshow to review sight words. Basically the students record themselves reading the words as they appear on the screen, then the teacher has a record of which words the students know. You can download the sight words Keynote activity by clicking here.

1st Grade Measurement Keynotes

First graders at Chamberlayne Elementary have been learning about the scientific method, and specifically, measurement using standard and nonstandard units (SOL1.1e). So today we made Keynotes where they measured objects with squares (nonstandard unit for length) and circles (nonstandard unit for mass). I gave them a template and a folder of pictures of objects they could choose from. You can download all the files by clicking here. To make themselves look like a scientist on the front page, the students took their photo in PhotoBooth and dragged it onto the scientist’s head. They they dragged photos of objects onto the other slides and measured them using the shapes tool. The directions are on the template. You can see a sample by clicking here.

3rd & 5th Grade Volcanoes

Teachable Moment: I’m sure many of you have heard about the erupting of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland today. Why not take this opportunity to review your Rome unit in 3rd grade (Vesuvius erupted in the Roman city of Pompeii) or your earth studies unit in 5th Grade (SOL5.7d). One 3rd grade class at Laburnum created slideshows about the volcano in Pompeii. Their teacher, Mrs. Emmanuelson had actually visited Pompeii and shared her photos with the class. You can see some of their Keynotes here (I added the “Possibility” soundtrack from “Twilight” because volcanoes are always a possibility). I also created a website here with cool links, interactive maps, a Prezi slideshow, and a Flash animation explaining how volcanoes form. Finally, you can click here to download a folder of pictures to use, including amazing photos from Eyjafjallajökull like the one in this blog post (Source).

Kindergarten Coins Video

Today kindergarten students at Holladay created videos about coins (K.7) using Photo Booth. I gave them an animated video created in Keynote that they had to drag into the PhotoBooth background. Then they recorded themselves identifying the coins and telling how much each was worth as it appeared behind them. You can see a student sample by clicking here. You can download the files I used by clicking here. Included in the folder is another Keynote where your students can identify the coins without using Photo Booth. I’ve also included the link to a website I created with more money games I found online. Take a look at it by clicking here, and let me know if you find any more you’d like me to add.

Kindergarten Life Cycle Movies

Kindergarten students at Holladay have been learning all about the frog and butterfly life cycles. We used Photobooth and Keynote animations to create some cool life cycle movies. First the students chose a special effect in Photobooth and filmed themselves describing the steps in either the frog or the butterfly life cycle (they could choose which one they wanted). Then we dragged the movie from Photobooth into Keynote (be sure to save your work at this step). Next the students dragged the correct pictures of each step into the animation wheel. On the second slide they had to put the stages in order and label them. Finally the students clicked the play button and watched their movies. You can download the template and pictures to use by clicking here. Take a look at a student sample for a frog life cycle and a butterfly life cycle.

1st Grade Matter Dissolves Keynote

First graders at Trevvett Elementary have been learning about what types of matter dissolve in water (SOL 1.3). So today they made animated movies with voiceovers using Keynote. I gave them a template to use which you can download by clicking here. The students complete the task on each slide of the Keynote. One slide involves a sorting activity where the students group objects by whether on not they dissolve in water. When they finish they add transitions and animations using the Inspector. They can also change the theme of each slide. The two last slides provide directions and they can be deleted. For the final step, the students record their voiceover. You can see a finished student project by clicking here. You can also watch a movie where I explain the project by clicking here.

4th Force and Motion Keynote

Technology projects can sometimes be short and quick. For example, these fourth graders created simple animations to show the difference between potential and kinetic energy (SOL 4.2d). All we did was open Keynote, choose a theme, type our title, and add two shapes, a triangle and a circle. Next we made the triangle look like a ramp by stretching the corners and placed the circle at the top of the ramp. We added motion to the circle by going to the Inspector, clicking the Build tab (yellow diamond), and choosing Actions > Move. After making it move from the top to the bottom of the ramp, we were ready to record our voices using the Audio button in the Document Inspector (white sheet of paper). It only took about 20 minutes to do and the results were great. This student even said it was the best thing she’d ever done! Take a look at a couple of other student samples by clicking here and here.
